Dear John:

\JI'd like to add my "two cents worth".

I've known Ruth for about three years. She took my LISP class at
San Jose State, and actively participated in an MTC seminar I gave there;
she did well in both. I acted as her Master's adviser; and she's worked
with me at H.P. in the summers. Finally, she's helped immeasurably
in reading and editing my LISP book. I think very highly of her ability and
persistence.

Sharon Sickel's letter attests to Ruth's more formal abilities. To that I can
add my observations on Ruth's LISP abilities. She has a good understanding of LISP
and interactive programming; she will not make a mess of things.

She will not waste time; she expects to complete her degree this year.
She has a good chance for a position in the San Jose State math department
if she has her thesis close to completion. She also understands the persistence
involved if you grant her access to your machine; she has already experienced the
4a.m. schedule.

I wish (oh, how I wish!) I could offer her an acceptable LISP environment
at H.P., however that day is not yet here.

We hope these letters will convince you of the worthiness of our case. If
you'd like further information please "MAIL" me a note.
